So what do the Redskins do now? Super Bowl champs take their safety last year and the Bears take one this year.

because Archuletta's style is so very different than the DCords style he has already been replaced int he starting lineup by Vernon Fox.
Washington was hoping to get a better pick for Archuletta but the Bears, with Archuletta's former StL Dcord Lovie Smith, were the only interested party.
Long as Washington has Taylor the other saftey spot is window dressign any way. Taylor is becoming not only one of the most feared men in football but a ver nice coverage saftey too.
Chicago needed Archuletta's agressive hard hitting style and will benefit from his 110% pro Lovie mentality in the room.

the addition of Archuletta looks like it will cause some shifting int he Bears secondary
Archuletta can only play SS
so current SS Mike Brown will move to FS
current FS Daniel Manning will move to CB
the Bears CB rotation already includes
Nathan Vasher
Charles Tillman
Ricky Manning Jr
Devin Hester
Dante Wesley
so it would seem one of these young fast CBs might become available.

What does Chicago have for backups at the safety positions?

FS C. Harris, #46 who had 50 plus tackles each of the last two years
and
SS T. Johnson, # who is really just a hitter kind of a small LB
my guess is they look for a back up in the draft to replace Johnson

Doesn't the Cover 2 place a premium on having extra safeties?

to an extent
the important thing is having safties that can tackle which without question describes Archuletta, Brown, and Harris.

While they may try their safeties at cornerback, I believe it is becasue they are looking to stock extra safeties at the expense of the cornerbacks. Training camp should ferret this out.

a lot of it is keeping Daniel Manning in the game because he makes plays too
I suspect Ricky Manning Jr or Brown get dealt in the not too distant future
maybe as part of a big package containing Lance Briggs?

Bears sign undrafted rookie Darius Walker from Notre Dame
considered by many the best undrafted rookie
Walker has a future in the NFL as a change of pace back, he catches well, blocks well, and has some power.
This will be a nice add for Chicago if only because Cedric Benson could not block his grandmother on 3rd and long.
