Default Montana vs. Young

In 10 years as a starter Montana had:

35,124 yds passing
264 TD pass/rush

In 8 years as a starter Young had:

29,907 yds passing
261 TD pass/rush

Young spent 4 prime years on the bench behind Montana, are you telling me that he wouldn't have exceeded another 6000 passing yards and 3 TDs in that time?

My guess is in that time Young would have generated another 16,000 yards passing and about another 100 TDs.

I think the perspective on Young not being good enough at Tampa Bay, and not god enough at San Fran until Montana was gone, says over all Young was not as good as Montana

Who said he was not good enough until Montana was gone? Did you ever see the games he played in when Montana went down? There is a reason that Montana was ushered out when he still had some quality years left. He took KC to the playoffs and won with them in the playoffs.

Young was considered a bust at Tampa Bay. Sat behind Montana until Montana had injury problems.

When the Buccaneers selected University of Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde first overall in the 1987 NFL Draft, Young was deemed a bust and traded to the San Francisco 49ers on April 24, 1987, to serve as a backup to Joe Montana. The Buccaneers received 2nd and 4th round draft picks in the trade, which they used to draft Miami linebacker Winston Moss, and Arizona State wide receiver Bruce Hill, respectively. Young would spend the final 13 years of his career with the 49ers, a stint which would help him secure a spot in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in 2005.

I like QB's that can make a defense pay, with 5 and 10 yards jaunts, when they drop everyone back in coverage.

How many busts garner a 2nd and 4th round pick? The entire statement you are quoting is absurd.

I didn't see anyone willing to give a ham sandwich for Ryan Leaf.

No, but a prime rib sandwich would be good.

And I would not fault Young for the TB thing....they were not exactly a well oiled machine back then....

Usually a backup is the backup and not starter, because the starter is better. Does not mean that Young was a bad QB, just that because his qualifications resulted in him being a backup, he was not ass good ass the starter. After riding the pine in San Fran, he learnd the system and improved his value. Montana was out for a year with injury, and Young stepped in. Another perspective on this is when Bono started in place of Young, Young did not get his job back until Bono got injured.
